Burgertory Gourmet Burger @ SS15, Subang Jaya

We love all things pork so you can imagine our delight on hearing about a pork burger joint! Burgertory is located in Subang Jaya and is only open for dinner. They serve both beef and pork burgers but who would order beef when there is pork? =P The place is crowded with students and working adults alike so be there early to grab a table!

Awesome indeed!

Details of the restaurant renovation

Menu
The menu changes periodically so what may be available in this picture may not necessarily be the case when you visit. The beef and pork burger choices are a main stay but I noticed the variation in set meals offered.

Who's that at the counter?

Mascarpone Curry and Cheese Set
No comment on this as we did not try it but the curry sure does look good! This burger comes with a juicy pork patty, sunny side up egg, deep fried onion rings and mascarpone curry sauce.

Onion Rings, Chicken Nuggets and Fries Combo
I love the onion rings, nuggets and fries! One of the better ones out there plus the mustardy mayo is awesome too!

Burgertory Treasure
Thick juicy pork patty smothered in melted cheese with a sprinkling of crispy, deep fried pork lard? Right up my alley! This burger definitely does not disappoint and is rightly one of their mainstays and best sellers.

Awesome possum stuff
See how dense and moist the porky patty is?

The Pioneer
The Pioneer comes with tobikko, crab meat in pimento sauce and the signature pork patty. Nice combination of flavours that is unique to Burgertory.

Burgertory Treasure with Roast Potatoes
I spy with my eye a fallen blob of pork lard! =D The roast potatoes smell lovely and are infused with the flavour of lots of olive oil, garlic and herbs. They are not the super crispy type but are addictive nonetheless.

It is actually quite a hassle to go to Burgertory as they are located at the ever busy SS15 and only open at night but we always love going back for their juicy pork patties and new inventions / additions to the menu. I also like the fact that their burger sets are relatively affordable yet maintain a consistent quality. Definitely highly recommended!

Dave's Deli @ Subang Parade, PJ

When I was young, Dave's Deli was my all-time favourite restaurant, all because of their truly scrumptious Shepherd's Pie. I might have strayed once or twice and ordered a Beef and Mushroom Pie or Tuna Focaccia but Shepherd's Pie is, and forever will be, my must-order item whenever I step foot in Dave's Deli. Unfortunately, the number of outlets seem to have dwindled and as far as I know, only the outlets at 1 Utama and Subang Parade are still around which is quite a shame as the fare has great wholesome flavour and relatively cheap.

You bet!

Shepherd's Pie with Coleslaw

Looks a bit plain but tastes wonderful! See how the mashed potato topping is baked to perfection? And the coleslaw dressing is so creamy, its coldness giving a nice contrast to the warm gravy.

Oozing goodness

Admittedly, there is now more mashed potato mixed with ground beef and the gravy a wee bit too salty but there's this home-cooked feel to it. The gravy-coated filling of ground beef mixed with diced carrots and peas is best eaten with a mouthful of yummy pie crust and soft, smooth mashed potato, finished off with another mouthful of chilled coleslaw. What a perfect meal!

If there were more outlets, I would definitely patronise it more often ^_^

Four Seasons Chinese Restaurant @ Wardour Street, London

Four Seasons Restaurant at Bayswater is arguably the best restaurant in London for roast duck, or so they say. Even my friends swear by it. I went there once when I was a student but I didn't like it. This time, I returned there again with my brother to see if it is indeed the best roast duck in town and also, to get a second opinion.

Complimentary chilli sauce, pickled green chillies and chilli oil

Two Combination Barbecued Duck and Soya Chicken on Rice (GBP 6.50)

The Barbecued Duck looked good with a thick glistening skin but in reality, the meat was quite tough and the skin too fatty and oily. Both my brother and I didn't think it was worth all the hype. We also unanimously agreed that the mobile roast duck stall at USJ 2 is way better than this (Incidentally, JS's family also regularly buys roast duck from USJ 2 and I can tell you it beats whatever famous roast duck from Loong Foong at PJ too).

The Soya Chicken was a surprise winner with super juicy, soft and smooth meat and a nice slippery skin which has absorbed the soya sauce flavour. The combination of finely sliced spring onions and ginger truly complemented the chicken and enhanced its flavour. Too bad they gave only a small amount of this.

Two Combination Barbecued Pork and Crispy Pork Belly on Rice (GBP 6.50)

The Barbecued Pork was disappointing. First of all, I prefer the glazed, charred kind to these artificially-coloured pork. Second, the meat was quite dry without much flavour and it's just like eating plain pork. I gave away most of it to my brother who was hungry and took the opportunity to barter for more Soya Chicken =P

I eagerly awaited the Crispy Pork Belly as who makes them better than Hong Kong people? Unfortunately it also fell short of my expectations as the skin was not crispy enough and the meat was too lean and hence, quite dry.

Overall, not a very memorable dining experience >. > I'd much rather have some gourmet burgers or go for more Moolis! I'd say skip this or head for Empress of Sichuan. If you're on a budget, Eat sandwich shops or any of the many Chinese restaurants in Soho would be good for a quick bite. But if you really, really, really want a taste of it, there's no need to travel halfway round the world - there is a branch at Empire Shopping Gallery in Subang Jaya.

Kelantan Delights @ Wisma Consplant, Subang Jaya

We celebrated CNY at Kelantan Delights, a supposedly famous Malay restaurant serving quality and authentic Kelantanese fare. When my friend mentioned this place, none of us heard of it before even though we've been staying in Subang Jaya for ages O.o If it makes it easier to get your bearings, the restaurant is located on the ground floor of Wisma Consplant.

Kelantan Delights

Interior

The interior is of modern Malay furnishing with lots of dark wood.

Sweets to curb spiciness

Kelantanese Specials

Keropok Lekor (RM 8.50)

This is quite good - crunchy fish crackers which are not oily. We had both the spicy and non-spicy versions but I couldn't really tell the difference between the two. The chilli sauce provided complemented the fish crackers well.

Nasi Dagang with Kerutuk Daging (RM 20)

The Nasi Dagang which is made from glutinous rice was moist and flavourful. It is served with a side salad and a choice of Gulai Ikan, Ayam or Kerutuk Daging. We chose the Kerutuk Daging which was very yummy and tender. A bowl of thick curry sauce was provided as an accompaniment to the rice.

Accompanying curry

Nasi Kerabu with Ayam Percik (RM 19)

The blue-tinged Nasi Kerabu is served with ulam (mixture of fresh herbs), prawn crackers and a sliver of salted egg. A rendang-ish gravy with dessicated coconut is served with the rice, making it much tastier compared to the Nasi Dagang in my opinion. I was looking forward to eating ulam as I have not tried it before but I was kind of disappointed as the raw vegetables were...raw and dry. Perhaps ulam is supposed to taste like this <shrugs> The prawn crackers were crunchy and flavourful.

Again there is a choice of Ayam Percik, Ikan Percik or Daging Bakar. We opted for the Ayam Percik which came with gravy. I found this rather odd as I'm used to the dry version so the gravy did not taste like Percik gravy to me. The chicken was rather dry too >.<

Nasi Tumpang (RM 15)

Oops the artistic-looking Nasi Tumpang got a bit destroyed in the unwrapping process -_-" I didn't try this so no comment. Looks good though. Will probably order this if ever I return.

Tom Yum Campur (RM 16.50)

The Tom Yum Campur was average, not very spicy and super oily. It contains lots of ingredients though like mushrooms, cauliflower, prawns and parsley.

Kelantanese Dessert

Unfortunately I didn't manage to get the name of this dessert =.=

Lompat Tikam (RM 6)

Did not try the desserts so can't comment too much on it.

Kelantan Delights apparently gets lots of rave reviews from floggers for being an exceptional Malay restaurant. I guess the food is quite nice for Malay cuisine since the Malay food most of us usually eat are from makeshift stalls.

Rojak @ SS15, Subang Jaya

I have been patronizing this stall for many many years and I still love the taste of the rojak at this stall even after so long =)

Many years back, the owners used to operate out of their truck under some trees between the Shell station and the First Subang mall. The owners now operate at a permanent stall further up the road (along Jalan SS15/3B) just a block away from KFC. During peak hours, a long queue is a common sight as people (I believe many are regular patrons) line up for the awesome rojak.

The Famous SS15 Rojak

These 2 men run the show!

The stall is operated by these 2 men and they work like robots in a busy assembly plant during peak hours. I wasn't caught in a long queue this time as I arrived slightly before lunch hour on a Saturday morning.

Rojak Telur (RM 4)

This is Indian fast food at its best as my rojak was prepared in less than 3 minutes! The portion in my opinion is adequate for a meal though meat eaters might treat this "vegetarian" meal as a snack. The combination of freshly grated cucumber and turnip, crispy flour bits, an egg and the rojak sauce goes very well together.

Although I have personally tried many variations of rojak, this place still gets my thumbs up for having the best rojak!

Sumi-Ka @ SS15, Subang Jaya

My first visit to a yakitori place! Sumi-Ka is located near Taylor's Business School, tucked away in a quiet corner on the 1st floor. You can opt to sit inside this enclosed area which is a non-smoking sections and consists of 3 tables with a maximum seating capacity of 6 each (make a reservation if you don't want to stink of oil and smoke), or at the main area including the bar grill where native Japanese smoke, drink, eat and laugh.

Elegant signage marred by illustration of yakitori

Menu
Obviously, they specialise in yakitori and its famous accompaniment, Japanese beer. There are plenty of chicken, beef, pork, vegetable and seafood yakitori options with several listings for appetiser, onigiri and donburi.

Potato Salad (RM 12)

Even though they serve complimentary and refillable shredded cabbage and edamame, we ordered the Potato Salad. It was so good we ordered a second serving despite its expensive price. Very creamy and fragrant, the cold dish was absolutely divine against the heatiness of freshly grilled meat.

Yakionigiri (RM 5)

This was much better than the yakionigiri I had at Bon Odori. Here the grilled rice bits are crispy whilst the moisture in the onigiri is adequately retained. There were some bits of seared salmon to enhance the flavour of the rice ball. Pickles were also provided to complement the lightly salted rice.

T-B: Mochimaki (RM 5), Uzuratamago (RM 3), Shiitake (RM 4)

  • The Mochimaki is essentially glutinous rice cake rolled in sliced pork. It has quite an interesting texture with the savoury pork and chewy rice cake.
  • Quail eggs slathered with soya sauce tasted like...quail eggs =P It wasn't too bad and I like the fact that the egg did not have a leathery skin despite having been grilled.
  • The shiitake mushrooms were average tasting...at least the mushroomy smell wasn't too strong.

T-B: Muneniku Mentai Mayo (RM 4), Nankotu (RM 4)

  • The breast meat topped with a generous dollop of marinated pollock roe in mayonnaise was good. I sort of expected the breast meat to be dry but it was surprisingly tender and moist.
  • The Nankotu tasted just as soft bone should, except maybe a bit more crisp since it was grilled and more flavourful due to its seasoning.

Shimejibata (RM 10)

  • The shimeji mushrooms sauteed in butter came wrapped in aluminium foil and topped with dried seaweed. The butter smell and taste was extremely strong. Not my favourite but apparently it's a best-seller at Sumi-Ka =)

T-B: Shoyu Kawa (RM 3), Momoniku (RM 3), Shio Kawa (RM 3)

  • The soy sauce chicken skin was very crispy with mini pockets of aromatic oil...absolutely divine =D
  • Chicken thigh meat was okay, not very outstanding. Moist and tender.
  • The salt grilled chicken skin was served wrapped around a garlic clove. The chicken skin here is also very crispy and since I'm not a fan of garlic, JS had them all. He said <garlic breath> that they were crisp on the outside and slightly soft on the inside =P

Mochimaki (RM 5)

Another close-up of the sliced pork roll with glutinous rice cake.

We had one other dish which JS here forgot to capture >.> I have always wanted to try ox tongue and Sumi-Ka serves Gyutan so we ordered a stick. The 1st piece I had was yummy...it tasted like chewy soft bone with a beefy taste...the texture is kind of like freshly blanched pig's kidney, very "song hau" if you know what I mean. The 2nd piece I had was chewier and the 3rd piece was the chewiest with the strongest taste of innards. People who dislike the smell of innards should just stay away in case you get a strong tasting one. Adventurous eaters should give the unique texture a try =)

Sumi-Ka is rather expensive...the bill came up to RM 40 per person for 4 people (we had multiple skewers of the orders shown above). Although we said that we will not return immediately after the meal ended as it cost so much to eat "satay", we found ourselves craving the unique and yummy cooking at Sumi-Ka =D

Pomander Pork Noodles @ SS15, Subang Jaya

The last time we went to Restoran Pomander to try the pork noodles, we were told to wait an hour and we left upon hearing that but I've always been curious about its taste since so many have heaped praises on it. So off we went to try our luck again and this time we were prepared to wait.

Stall with its many helpers

We were again told to wait for 1 hour for the noodles. So after we ordered two bowls of pork noodles with innards, we went to the air-conditioned side of the restaurant to snag a table.

Let's wait! ^_^

Waiting time starts! Tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock...

Still not here yet? -_-

...tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock...

Finally it's here! <faints from hunger>
...tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock...tada! A grand waiting time of 1 hour 9 minutes =.=

Pork Noodles (Small) (RM 5.30)

We eagerly dug into the famous noodles after completing the requisite photo taking. The soup was sweet, hor fun was smooth, lean pork was plentiful and the vegetables were green. No more innards for me though as they ran out of stock =(

Pork pork pork

All in all, the pork noodles were good. Not exceptionally outstanding so I would have to deduct points for the long waiting time for an average bowl of noodles. I read this blogger's post which said that the Pomander pork noodles were by far the best, much better than the famous pork noodles at OUG. I, however, beg to differ as I think they're both equally good but I'd rather head to OUG just for quicker service. Seriously, how long can it take to blanch some noodles and boil the soup? <shakes head>
