Xiao Long Bao and Noodles @ Din Tai Fung

Well, I'm sure everyone is already well-acquainted with Din Tai Fung and its famous xiao long baos. Anyway here are my 2 paws on Din Tai Fung's scrumptious food =)

Their signature dish

Wantan Soup La Mian

Don't really know why JS ordered this since it looks soooo PLAIN but he should be comforted by the two bulbs of xiao bai chai ^_^

Shrimp Pork Wantan Soup

Their wantans are really bouncy and chockful of shrimp and pork meat filling. Not a fan of Hong Kong style wantan soup though as it tastes too shrimpy to me.

Xiao Long Bao

This is their signature dish which is as good as they claim to be =)

Delicate stuff

Hot and Sour Soup La Mian

I love Sichuan food so this hot and sour soup suits me just fine. Very peppery and the thin somen like noodles absorb the flavours nicely. Also love the soft silky tofu bits and crunchy woodear fungus.

Grouper Fish Dumplings

Grouper fish dumplings are a welcome change to the usual wantans and xiao long baos. Quite delicious actually and not fishy at all.

Shrimp Fried Rice

I love having fried rice at Chinese restaurants as the chefs do it so well with lots of fluffy egg, crunchy shrimps and the nice aroma of wok hei.

Spicy Shrimp Pork Wantan La Mian

An interesting variation of the usual wantan noodles, the spicy la mian includes a dash of chilli oil and tasted really good.

Giant Macaron @ Delectable by Su, The Gardens Mall

This gigantic macaron from Delectable by Su was given by an acquaintance so it was a lovely surprise ^_^ You probably can't tell from the picture but the macaron is about the diameter of an average-sized orange.

Love the packaging!

Can I print my own ribbon?

Giant Caramel Latte Macaron (RM 10)

The giant caramel latte macaron had chocolate bits sprinkled on top of it but since I ate it the day after I received it, it had already melted =( The macaron was crunchy with a soft center filled with coffee cream. The sweetness of the macaron complemented the slightly bitter coffee taste, making it less sweet than the typical macarons in the market which I find way too sweet for my liking.

Do give it a try if you love macarons or if you're a virgin macaroner, why not make your first experience a gigantic one? =P

Al-Amar Lunch Buffet @ Pavilion, KL

What better way to try Middle Eastern cuisine other than going for a buffet to sample all the different salads and kebabs =) The buffet is only available during lunch on Sundays and priced at RM 65.

Shop entrance

Appetizer Spread

Lots of hummus

Salad Bar

Spot my favourites!

...and even more appetizers...

Steamed White Rice and Mushroom Soup

Main Course Spread

Kebabs!

Grilled Beef Tenderloin in Gravy

Spicy Fried Rice

Vegetarian Lasagna

Fish in Lemon Butter Sauce

Dessert Spread

Clockwise from Left: Caesar Salad, Tabbouleh, Spicy Fried Potatoes, Chicken Wing, Fattoush Salad

This plate of appetizers is the best ever! I loved all that I took as they were all really yummy.

  • Caesar Salad was a tad more sourish than usual due to the chef's preference for lemon dressing but it was yummy all the same. The toasted croutons were my favourite which absorbed the lemon dressing really well.
  • The smell and taste of Tabbouleh was much stronger than what I had tasted when I was in Oman so people averse to parsley better not take this. It was a little bland, perhaps more salt would have been preferable? I prefer to load this on kebabs as you can see in the other pictures =D
  • Spicy Fried Potatoes were really good - bite-sized and full of flavour.
  • Chicken wing was bursting with lemon flavour. The citrus dressing moistened the meat further.
  • Fattoush Salad was simply refreshing: fresh, crunchy lettuce, cucumbers and baby radishes in a strong lemon-y dressing and topped with crispy toasted pita bread. Yum!

Clockwise from Left: Vegetarian Lasagne, Eggplant Appetizer, Chicken Wing, Caesar Salad, Tabbouleh, Centre: Spicy Fried Potatoes

JS couldn't stop himself loading on his favourite lasagne when we were supposed to be taking appetizers <tsktsk> He said the top of the lasagne was crispy and the pasta sheets went very well together with the vegetables. Pity it had no meat =P

Puffy Pita Bread

This super puffy pita bread was average. A little chewy though. Good with the kebabs and condiments.

Mushroom Soup

The Mushroom Soup was surprisingly very good. Thick and creamy, it was full of huge chunks of button mushrooms. Extremely sinful due to the generous amount of cream. Definitely not for weight watchers.

Kebab and Condiments

Kebabs! Very good with the pita bread, raw onions, pickles, tomatoes and Tabbouleh. The lamb (skinny ones) was the best out of the three, the beef cubes were a wee bit tough and the chicken pieces were a little dry.

Clockwise from Left: Curry Chicken, Samosa, Kebab and Condiments

Curry chicken and samosa were both average...can skip this.

Spicy Fried Rice and Grilled Beef Tenderloin in Gravy

The rice had quite a strong spice taste and was quite moist. I wished it was a little firmer sort of Briyani rice though.

The grilled beef tenderloin was tender with a nice savoury gravy.

My Favourites - Clockwise from Left: Kebab + Condiments + Tabbouleh, Fried Potatoes, Caesar Salad, Fattoush Salad

Another round of my favourites! =D

Fish in Lemon Butter Sauce

The fish was rather plain, not very memorable =(

Clockwise from Top Left: Tiramisu, Opera Cake, Middle Eastern Sweet, Cheesecake

  • Tiramisu was a little dry and sweeter than usual. The abundance of cocoa powder on top of the tiramisu resulted in a slight throat irritation.
  • Opera Cake was nice with a thick dark chocolate top and a slight hint of coffee.
  • Middle Eastern Sweet was toooooooo sweet >.< JS only had a bite of it.
  • Cheesecake was very rich and creamy but JS preferred some toppings on it =P

Tonkatsu by Wa Kitchen @ Pavillion, KL

After hearing about the one and only tonkatsu (deep fried breaded pork cutlet) place in KL, we headed over to Pavillion that very weekend.

Shop Front

Hot Green and Brown Tea (RM 3)

The ocha cups here are so dainty, much better quality than the standard thick-rimmed cups we've been getting at other Japanese restaurants. The cup on the left is perfect with a thin rim whereas the cup on the right looks like it was shaped by an inexperienced potter who accidentally squeezed too hard whilst the cup was spinning on the pottery wheel =P

Table setup

Toasted sesame seeds and tonkatsu sauce

Toasted sesame seeds waiting to be ground

The toasted sesame seeds are ground with a miniature wooden pestle in a special ceramic saucer with rough edges on the inside. The tantalising smell of freshly ground sesame seeds immediately wafted over as the waitress showed us how it was done.

Tonkatsu sauce

The next step was to pour the tonkatsu sauce over the ground sesame seeds...

Tonkatsu dipping sauce

...mix it and tada! special dipping sauce for the tonkatsu =D

Hire Katsu + Rosu Katsu Zen (RM 28)

What's the point of going to a tonkatsu place if you don't order the pork fillet cutlet (Hire Katsu) or pork loin cutlet (Rosu Katsu)? The pork cutlets are served with shredded cabbage, a wedge of lemon for the tangy flavour and a dollop of yellow wasabi for that extra kick. The set also comes with pickled vegetables, hiyayakko (cold Japanese tofu), rice and tonjiru (pork miso soup).

  • The deep fried pork cutlets were very crispy thanks to the panko coating. It can be eaten on its own as it is subtly flavoured, or dipped in the tonkatsu-sesame seed sauce. The rounded ones are the fillet whereas the oblong ones are the loin cutlets which were juicier and more tender.
  • The shredded cabbage is refillable and is rather bland on its own. This can be rectified by a liberal splashing of light and slightly tangy salad dressing in the tall glass bottle.
  • I thought the yellow blob next to the lemon slice was mustard but it was a deceiving wasabi disguised in its cousin's yellow colour >.>
  • The hiyayakko was very refreshing and provided a cooling effect to the heatiness of the deep fried tonkatsu. I wish it was refillable =(
  • Pickled vegetables were quite bland. Only the slightest hint of salt was detected but it was like eating blanched vegetables squeezed to a crisp texture. Not very memorable.
  • Rice with dotted black sesame seeds is refillable <yay!> - good for guys who have a bigger appetite.
  • The tonjiru is very different from the usual miso soup as there was almost no hint of miso - the only thing which gave it away was the cloudy broth when stirred. For light eaters, this alone might be enough as there were a lot of ingredients in the soup. Plenty of pork, diced carrots, diced shiitake mushrooms, konnyaku slices and small daikon pieces. Very flavourful and slightly sweet (from the meat) broth.

The many ingredients in the tonjiru

Would you look at the amount of stuff in this porky soup?

Buta Shogayaki Zen (RM 26)

The Buta Shogayaki Zen was a surprise winner =) I was a little surprised when JS ordered this as it was quite a simple dish to make - sauteed pork belly with ginger sauce.

The dish was surprisingly light and not oily (unlike the one I had at Gin Ryu Tei at Midvalley =.=). The pork belly was very tender and the onions were so well cooked that they seemed like part of the pork belly to me =P The gingery taste was not very strong so it's good for those who do not like ginger. The mayonnaise was very compatible with the dish and added to the smoothness of the tender pork belly.

This set also comes with refillable cabbage shreds, hiyayakko, pickled vegetables, refillable rice and tonjiru. A must-try, I would say.
