BellyGood @ Sunway Mentari, PJ

I have been to BellyGood several years before when it was operating under a different name and have been wanting to revisit but because it is located at Sunway Mentari, I rarely had an opportunity to do so. However I had been craving for pork schnitzels and once I found out BellyGood does serve it, I wasted no time in dragging JS there d^_^b

Two cute piggies

Tiger Beer

Soup of the Day (RM 9.80)

The soup of the day which was mushroom soup came with lots of black pepper - just the way we like it - but may be too overwhelming for some. It has a thin consistency with little salt and therefore tasted quite homemade. The soup came with a slice of crisp buttered garlic bread which was fragrant and well toasted. There were also lots of garlic bits on it.

Trio Platter (RM 29.90)

This platter consisted of a chorizo sausage, pork belly and pork ribs with a side of coleslaw and mashed potatoes. The meat of the chorizo sausage was very moist but it is not as firm and as grilled as I prefer it to be. The pork ribs, funnily enough, tasted a little bit like Chinese cooking which I guess means that cinnamon and 5 spice was added to the marinade? Not too sure if that's the case but that's what I thought it tasted like. The pork belly was very tender and really good. It also had a hint of Chinese flavour so perhaps that came from the gravy...

The coleslaw and mashed potatoes had a homemade taste to it and were very nicely done.

Grilled Pork Medallions (RM 25.90)

As can be seen from the picture, the pork medallions (probably two combined pieces) were absolutely huge. Its breaded coating which tasted like KFC seasoning was crisp and remained so even with a ladling of thick and creamy mushroom gravy. The meat which was pounded thinly remained moist and it was just absolutely yummy.

Overall I would say BellyGood is an absolute steal with its yummy fare and affordable pricing. The owner is really friendly too and loves connecting with his customers. We'll be back! =D

J Tean Kitchen @ SStwo Mall, PJ

J Tean Kitchen serves some unique Chinese fusion dishes and its signature dish is its fusion Dry Bak-Kut-Teh and Porky Pie. It's located in the totally deserted SStwo Mall although its plus point would be ample parking.

The J-Ribs (RM 38.90)
The ribs are quite huge and really quite good. The well marinated meat is super tender and falls off the bones so effortlessly. This is apparently due to pre-stewing the meat prior to baking it. It is served with a small portion of coleslaw and potato wedges as well as char siu sauce. Both the coleslaw and potato wedges were really good and comparable to Western restaurants. The char siu sauce tasted good too but the meat itself has plenty of flavour so I left most of the sauce in its container.

Complimentary dessert
Complimentary desserts are always welcome and the one served at J Tean that day happened to be a refreshing chrysanthemum tea jelly. Definitely no complaints there =D

Nice meal but quite pricey for a dish even though it's ribs. I love the chairs and tables there but it really is a shame about its location. I'm sure there would be more patrons if only it was located somewhere more popular.

Restoran Makanan Laut Yoke Heng @ Seri Kembangan, KL

We were going for the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale at Seri Kembangan and since we go there like once in 10 years, our main aim was to try some local awesome food. It also helped that it was a predominantly Chinese area with guaranteed delicious hawker fare.

Thanks to JS, our target of the day was a restaurant famous for its claypot loh shu fun. It is so well-known, in fact, that there are many pictures of celebrities posing with the owners adorning the wall.

Claypot Loh Shu Fun

Their infamous Loh Shu Fun is served in a rustic claypot with a rich eggy gravy similar to Loh Mee. When it arrived at our table, you could smell its aroma a mile away as the dish had a generous serving of extremely crunchy deep-fried dried shrimps plonked right on top of the yummy mess. There were also plenty of sliced shiitake mushrooms to add flavour to the yummy gravy. I'm not too sure but it tasted as though a bit of XO sauce was included. With a dash of black vinegar, the slippery and silky smooth loh shu fun slithering about in the aromatic gravy tasted absolutely awesome!!! It's definitely the best I've ever eaten.

Yummy mess

Stir Fried Clams

The clams were stir fried over high heat with lots of garlic and bird's eye chillies. It smelled amazing and tasted extremely delicious - also the best I've ever eaten and that's saying a lot considering it's just normal stir-fried clams. I absolutely hate garlic except when it's spread on garlic bread but the garlic in this dish is so yummy! It didn't taste like garlic at all and was super fragrant and crispy. The dish also contained lots of deep fried dried shrimps which totally enhanced its flavour.

Honey Glazed Ribs

I felt the ribs were forgettable but JS loved them. The ribs were coated in dark caramelised honey and baked until the meat was tender. The freshness of the ribs was also a plus point as the meat fell off the bone easily.

I know Seri Kembangan is extremely far away (for me, at least) but if you're in the area, I highly recommend you drop by Yoke Heng and try their Loh Shu Fun and Stir-Fried Clams - they definitely don't disappoint!!

Moon Palace Restaurant @ Bandar Puteri Puchong

My mum first came across Moon Palace Restaurant when she saw their ad in the newspaper. I tried googling for some reviews but there weren't many and there were even unfavourable ones. Since the pictures of the restaurant looked clean and new, I decided to take the plunge and book a room at this restaurant anyway.

The restaurant is located at Bandar Puteri Puchong, near the Giant Hypermarket. It is decorated in a modern Chinese style with lovely VIP rooms and cute seat covers as you'll see if you scroll below. As they opened at the beginning of the year, there weren't many people there - only 2 tables when we were there for lunch on Sunday.

The staff who took my mum's call sounded polite and cheery and when we were there, one of them was stationed permanently in the VIP room. She was friendly with a nice smile and ever so hardworking, changing our plates after every course and refilling tea without being asked to. Very good service I'd say.

Love the olden script in its logo

Samfu for the chairs

I love how the seat covers are designed to look like traditional Chinese clothing with those oriental buttons. I forgot to take a picture of the VIP room but as you can see from the above picture, the walls are carpeted in a modern and chic design. There is even a karaoke set for you to sing your hearts out.

Cutlery

As you can see, the cutlery and all dinnerware are new. Even the tablecloth is creamy white with a nice floral design.

Condiments

Combination Platter

What a lovely looking and huge combination platter! Clockwise from left, you'll find glazed pork belly, crab claws in an orangey sweet and sour sauce, stir-fried seafood, celery, carrots and snow peas in a vermicelli basket, deep-fried spring rolls and in the centre, cold marinated jellyfish on cucumber.
  • The pork belly coated in a thick BBQ / Worcestershire glaze was well marinated. The meat was cooked to perfection and was not dry.
  • The crab claws were really good too, covered in a thick orange-coloured BBQ sauce.
  • The stir-fried veg and seafood were light and crunchy - I liked this a lot too! The same cannot be said of the deep-fried vermicelli basket though as I couldn't break it apart with the serving spoon so I abandoned it.
  • Deep-fried spring rolls were average only.
  • The cold dish of marinated jellyfish on cucumber was appetizing and provided a nice contrast to the other hot dishes.

Shark's fin soup

Shark's fin protesters, hold your horses! It's just a name and I'm sure for such a cheap price, no sharks were harmed in the making of this comforting bowl of soup filled with lots of crabmeat.

Suckling pig

Ooo yummy! White bread and some patty (I detected some salted egg yolk in the mix) and topped with a crispy suckling pig skin. Yum!

Cod in Superior Sauce with Beancurd and Woodear Fungus

This was rather average as is typical steamed fish but the cod was really smooth with firm white flesh.

Braised Mushrooms and (Mini) Abalones

This was also average - the usual fare of mushrooms, gingko nuts, beancurd and baby abalones and a bit of blanched pak choy stalks on the side all flavoured with thick oyster sauce.

Stir-Fried Vegetables

This was a surprise winner! For me at least, the other senior citizens were all spitting the fibre out =.= I found it extremely delicious though...some sort of mountain vegetable with sweet stems stir-fried with crunchy mini salted fish and squiggly squid. If you've eaten the noodles (Sansai Udon) at Sushi Zanmai before, you'll know what sort of vegetables I'm talking about.

Longevity Noodles

The set menu originally had Fried Rice but as we were celebrating pawprints' obaachan's birthday, we swapped it with Longevity Noodles. As you can see, it doesn't look very appetizing =.= I wish the broth was less watery, it would have been much better if they had thickened it and made it into gravy. But once you scoop the noodles into a bowl minus the "soup", it looks quite ok as you can see in the below picture. It tasted average to me only...not something I'd recommend.

Close-up of Longevity Noodles

Longan and Sea Coconut

The Longan and Sea Coconut at Moon Palace is a much much nicer version compared to other restaurants. The soup was syrupy and sweet and concentrated with hints of lemon and honey (lemon hachimitsuzuke ^_^). The addition of numerous ice cubes ensured that the drink is sufficiently cold and refreshing. Love this!

Chinese birthday buns

As it was obaachan's birthday, we also switched the usual Chinese dessert with Chinese birthday buns in the shape of a peach. Soft, moist buns with a centre filling of lotus paste.

Wasn't it a very good meal? This 8-course meal for approximately 10 people was only priced at RM 498++ which is way cheaper than other restaurants. The taste and superb service was also well worth the price tag. We definitely wouldn't mind returning for any future events.

Hoofed @ Lorong Rahim Kajai 14, TTDI

I was just going through my favourite google searchword "pork KL" when a review of this restaurant popped up in the list =P And what good timing too for the week after we visited Hoofed, a review of it appeared in The Star.

The restaurant is located above this pub called Tom, Dick & Harry's in TTDI. There is quite limited space on the 1st floor as you can gauge from the pic below so do make a reservation if you've got a large party.

An artwork adorning the restaurant wall...I have no artistic sense, I don't get it =.=

Menu

Smoked Duck Salad (RM 18)

The Smoked Duck Salad has plenty of smoked duck strips, wedges of hard-boiled egg and century egg as well as the usual salad leaves. It was quite nice with a light vinaigrette dressing although the smoked duck tasted like ham to me. Not very outstanding though.

Roasted Tomato Soup (RM 7)

The Roasted Tomato Soup was extremely rich and creamy with lots of tomato puree. Very nice to drink on a rainy day =)

Onion Soup (RM 8)

The Onion Soup had all of us going back for second spoonfuls. The cheesy piece of bread bobbing atop the soup gave it an even more homey feel.

Bacon Fried Rice (RM 19.60)

This was the dish which attracted my attention =P Chinese-style fried rice with bacon and Chinese sausage bits. It was very fragrant and each morsel of rice was light and fluffy. The bacon and Chinese sausage added much flavour to the dish. This is highly recommended.

Devil's Hair Pasta (RM 19.90)

I was eagerly anticipating the Devil's Hair Pasta with roast pork after reading good reviews about it but I was quite disappointed with it =( It came tasting like wantan mee =.= It would have tasted good if it were like wantan mee but the thick caramelised dark soya sauce coating the roast pork and pasta had a hint of chilli pepper, making the dish slightly peppery. I was the only one who thought the combination of salty savoury and pepperish odd though...my friends were tucking in happily.

Roast Pork Belly (RM 17.90)

Oh this has got to be one of the best roast pork in town. Moist tender meat with bits of fat and an extremely crispy skin. A dollop of yellow mustard and horseradish each provided an alternative flavour.

Pork Shoulder Chops (RM 30.20)

The pork shoulder chops were good - moist and flavourful from the garlic and onion sauce most probably made from pork drippings. It is supposedly served on a bed of mash but I must have missed it. Fresh vegetables were served as a side.

Pork Ribs (RM 44.40)

The Pork Ribs were served dry with a bowl filled with brown sauce and fresh vegetables on the side. I found the meat a little too firm and dry and the cinnamon seasoning rather strong. No complaints from my friends though.

Pavlova (RM 7.90)

The Pavlova was average, served with fresh kiwi and strawberry slices and a drizzle of maple syrup. Good thing it was not too sweet thanks to the balance provided by the tart fruits.

Cold Bananarama (RM 12.30)

Oh this was the unexpected surprise of the night. A creamy and chocolatey concoction with banana slices, it was so good we ordered a second serving before we even finished the first =P

Shortchanged?

Here's our second serving. Don't you feel disappointed seeing it after a comparatively larger serving the first time? =.= Anyway the second serving didn't fare too well with us as it had a sprinkling of chopped nuts ala Cornetto which had a whiff of stale nuts smell =.=

Brownies ala Mode (RM 12.90)

The piping hot chocolatey brownies were quite good with huge walnuts, strawberry slices and cold vanilla ice-cream. A foolproof (fail-safe =P) dessert,

<hoof print>

Some hits and misses here and there but I wouldn't mind returning for the Bacon Fried Rice, Roast Pork Belly and the Roasted Suckling Pig which some other patrons ordered and looked so good.

Oriental Banquet @ Section 19, PJ

This year's reunion dinner with my uni mates was at Oriental Banquet at Seksyen 19 which supposedly (I now vouch for it =D) has super yummy food. Check out what we ate...

Salmon Yee Sang

I thought the Salmon Yee Sang was very fresh, the plum juice and oil ratio just nice. The crunchy items were crispy and did not reek of stale oil. The pickled items were refreshing and went well with the other items. However, Maggot-chan did say she thought there wasn't enough taste...

Fried Nam Yue Pork Belly

This crispy-on-the-outside, moist-on-the-inside Fried Nam Yue Pork Belly is good! There is a distinct red fermented beancurd taste but it is not salty. The crunchy cucumbers go really well with the deep-fried pork slices.

Roast Lut Zhi Duck

The Roast Duck was good and juicy but I thought the skin was not crispy enough. Buried under the duck were lots of chestnuts and arrowhead.

Pan Fried Tuna in Pomelo Sauce

This dish was very refreshing. Battered tuna slices were pan-fried and coated with a honey lemon pomelo sauce. Although pan fried, the tuna was not dry or flaky. The sour sauce lent its flavour to the plain firm flesh of the tuna and the shredded pomelo provided a refreshing and juicy bite complementing the fish. Lettuce cups and deep fried cuttlefish complemented the dish further. Wouldn't mind ordering this again d^_^b

Braised Tofu

The braised tofu which had numerous bits of mushrooms within was braised together with broccoli florets and another type of mushroom which I can't remember in some oyster-abalone sauce. Quite good.

Loh Hon Zhai

The Loh Hon Zhai came with huge pieces of shiitake mushrooms, woodear fungus, daylily buds, dried beancurd skin, chinese cabbage and insufficient glass noodles. The flavour was good and not too salty.

Grilled Pork Ribs

Oohh yummy pork ribs =D The meat was not dry despite being grilled and was still juicy. It was also easy to cut the meat from the bone. The meat was full of flavour, some might find it a little too salty. Plain cabbage was provided to mop up the sauce but some of the cabbages became quite oily in the end.

Romaine Lettuce in Caesar Dressing

Lettuce in Caesar dressing was also served to counteract the oiliness of the pork ribs. I would have preferred a serving of lettuce without any dressing as the pork ribs were already very flavourful.

Waxed Meat

To go with the claypot rice, a dish of waxed sausages, waxed liver sausages, another waxed meat I could not identify, waxed duck drumstick and blanched kailan.

Claypot Rice in Soya Sauce

Claypot Rice + Waxed Meat

Just scoop a bowlful of rice and arrange some waxed meat and blanched kailan on top and the Lap Mei Fan is ready! The waxed sausages were very fragrant and delectable. I found the waxed duck drumstick a bit too hard and tough for my liking, not sure if that's the original taste. The rice and waxed meat were very flavourful on its own hence there was no need to add soya sauce to the dish.

Service was very good and attentive and the food here is very yummy. The quality of the food was also much better than other restaurants' since it's the CNY season but it may also be because we did not order from the set menus. All in all, a good place to bring to impress your guests. Prices are quite steep though - we paid RM 70 per person for about 12 persons to a table.
