Tong's Kitchen @ USJ 19 City Mall, Subang Jaya

Tong's Kitchen at USJ 19 City Mall is a simple establishment serving yummy homemade dishes. It is great for a quick dinner without emptying your pawkets =P

Wonder what is their mascot supposed to be...

Menu
There is a huge variety of dishes to choose from which is always a good thing.

Stir Fried Sweet Potato Leaves (RM 12)
A simple dish stir fried with garlic, the sweet potato leaves were very young and fresh.

Pumpkin Beancurd (RM 8)
JS's family love the Pumpkin Beancurd here which is essentially deep fried beancurd braised in a savoury and creamy pumpkin gravy.

Chicken with Salted Eggs (RM 18)
The fried chicken was moist and juicy and the chef was very generous with the amount of salted egg yolk which totally enhanced the taste of the chicken.

Sweet and Sour Fish (RM 23)
The portion is huge with lots of deep fried fish slices coated in a sweet and sour sauce. Very yummy indeed.

No pork is served but I am not sure if the restaurant has a halal cert. Overall, Tong's Kitchen is a great place for inexpensive home cooked fare.

Restoran Lucky Seafood @ Lukut, Port Dickson

Restoran Lucky Seafood at PD is quite a popular place and is often featured in media for its signature curry chicken bun. The shop is located along the main road and is easily spottable as it sits right at the corner of the row of shophouses. If it's of any help, the restaurant is near Giant hypermarket.

Shop Front

Huge buns waiting in the oven

As you can see, the curry chicken buns are huge and we were lucky that there were still some buns waiting in the oven for us despite going there in the early evening.

Curry Chicken / Tong Po Yuk Bun (RM 38)

Unfortunately when the bun was presented to us, it had been sliced open to resemble a blooming flower and we were unable to take a picture of the crust. The curry chicken and tong po yuk are contained in separate wax paper wraps and are reheated simultaneously as the bun is baked in the oven.

  • Bread was fluffy and compact with a nice hard crust. There were tiny spices embedded in the bread (probably star anise) which were rock hard so be careful not to bite on them. Really yummy when doused with curry or tong po gravy.
  • Curry chicken contained a number of big chunks of potatoes and chicken and was surprisingly quite spicy. Addictive <thumbs-up>
  • Tong po yuk was really smooth with a flavourful gravy but pales in comparison to the curry.

Kangkung Belacan (RM 10)

The kangkung belacan smelled fantastic but it was kind of undercooked so the stems were tougher than usual. Taste-wise, it was great just like how anything with belacan tastes great.

Mantis Prawns in Butter (RM 18)

The mantis prawns in butter were deep-fried till the batter was quite hard. Nothing spectacular as it was kind of bland and the fragrance of curry leaves did not really come through.

Squid in Salted Egg Yolk (RM 18)

The squid in salted egg yolk wasn't what we (or rather, I) expected as we were used to the deep-fried kind available in most restaurants in the Klang Valley; instead it was the wet type with runny salted egg yolk still coating the squid rings. Again, the taste was rather bland as the flavour of the salted egg yolk was reduced to such an extent one might as well call it squid in salted egg yolk. I'm not sure what that leaf of iceberg lettuce is for - not very pretty as decoration and insufficient to counter the high cholesterol of the dish - it looked quite pathetic =.=

All in all, a very average meal with the exception of the curry chicken bun. I've had better seafood at other restaurants along the main road (you can try Weng Yin Seafood Village near Thistle Port Dickson Resort). Prices are very affordable though. There is also another outlet at Seremban if you're in town.

Restoran Damansara Hokkien Mee @ Kota Damansara

Damansara Hokkien Mee is another outlet serving good hokkien mee. There is a branch at Damansara Uptown which I usually frequent but this review is for the Kota Damansara outlet which is next to Sunway Giza mall.

Extra tables on the road in preparation for brisk business

Menu
The menu is relatively simple and straightforward. The staple on each table is, of course, the Hokkien Mee.

Pork Soup (RM 16 for 2 person)
The Pork Soup was hot and comforting with lots of pork slices and cabbage. It also helps to counter the heatiness of the Hokkien Mee.

Stir-Fried Kailan with Garlic (RM 8)
Vegetables were average but having a plate of greens helps alleviate the guilty feeling of consuming lots of deep-fried pork lard...

Hokkien Mihun Mee (RM 13 for 2 person)
Both the Hokkien Mee and Hokkien Mihun Mee came piping hot with lots of wok hei. The thick strands of yellow noodles and scraggly mihun were evenly coated in the concentrated and glistening dark sauce. Each plate came heaped with lots of deep-fried pork lard. Innards are not served here so people who detest them can rejoice =P

Hokkien Mee (RM 13 for 2 person)

The folks at Restoran Damansara Hokkien Mee really do know how to serve a good plate of the glorious black noodles and I frequently come here if Tong Fong and Kim Lian Kee are out of the way. Plus they do give lots of deep-fried lard! ^_^

P/S: You can even top up lard for an extra RM 1 for a big portion...how awesome is that? =D

Hokkien Mee @ Restoran Tong Fong, Sea Park PJ

Finally, here's the post on my favourite Hokkien Mee stall =D Beats the infamous Ah Wah at Jln 222 with its much diluted Hokkien Mee anytime in my opinion <thumbs-up>

This coffee shop is located just behind KFC and opposite Shell which is fairly easy to spot. The Hokkien Mee stall is located towards the back of the shop and is easily noticeable.

Hokkien Kuey Teow

The Hokkien Kuey Teow here has lots of wok hei. The flat noodles are slippery and glistening with a good coat of dark soya sauce and pork-infused oil. The portion is generous with lots of ingredients such as leafy vege and cabbage (instead of cabbage only or even worse, bean sprouts only), prawns, pork liver, pork slices and crispy pork lard. Extremely good and sinful. I like that this stall still cared to layer a banana leaf base on the plate so that the aroma permeates the noodles.

Hokkien Mee

The Hokkien Mee is equally good with the same generous serving of pork liver, pork slices, pork lard, prawns, leafy vege and cabbage. The sauce here is neither as thick nor as dark as Kim Lian Kee but the noodles have sufficient taste and is equally good.

Cantonese Fried Kuey Teow

The Cantonese Fried Kuey Teow is full of eggy, soupy goodness. The sweetness of the pork and prawns infuse the thick gravy and gives much flavour to the kuey teow. Perfect for a cold, rainy day =D

All portions shown in the above pictures are for 1 person which costs RM 6. A 2-person serving costs RM 11 whereas a 3-person serving costs RM 16. Very reasonable price for the portion served. Apart from these, they also serve Loh Mee, Hokkien Bihun and Fried Rice. The other stalls at this coffee shop are not open at night - only one tai chow stall and one satay stall is available. Most people frequent this shop primarily for the delicious Hokkien Mee.

My family absolutely love the Hokkien Mee here as there are not many stalls nowadays which serve pork liver in the noodles as per tradition. Furthermore the chef has really good technique as some stalls just do not come up to par with regards to the dish's wok hei. The Damansara Hokkien Mee at Uptown is acceptable but falls short in taste and texture compared to this. Kim Lian Kee is comparable but I think I favour this abiiiit more ^_^

Sin Leong Huat @ Subang Hi-Tech

Located deep in the heart of Kampung Subang (waaaaaaaaaaay down the road from USJ 3A), Sin Leong Huat is a typical Chinese restaurant where one can enjoy cheap and hearty fare served in a jiffy.

Stir Fried Four Vegetables in Sambal

This is a common dish but I love it so much - brinjal, bitter gourd, long bean and four-angled bean stir-fried in spicy sambal. It goes superbly well with rice.

Pork Ribs

The Pork Ribs are a must order! I envisioned it to be tough and difficult to scrape the meat off the bones as is typical of ribs but this one came with such tender meat that it was just falling off the bone. The portion was huge with lots of succulent meat with a good balance between lean and fat. The sauce added to the juiciness of the ribs.

Butter Prawns (Small - RM 25)

Bad choice to order the Butter Prawns as the owner took the opportunity to squeeze us dry. A handful of prawns for RM 25? O.O To their credit, it was yummy with crisp batter and still juicy meat.
